Interviews from our family---The making of a family profile

Well, 9 days until due date. I actually feel pretty good, just tired. I looked up some ideas to do with the kids that would require minimal prep and clean up for tomorrow's activities. (Tonight is a busy night with family in town.) I found a website with a good idea (see below)--some of the ideas weren't up my alley, but I did like the "asking your child questions" activity. I'm going to print off the questions and give each of the kids 4 question sheets. They can call or visit our family and friends and interview them. Phil and I will interview the kids. Then we can put together a book about our family's "profile". I think I'll let our oldest Tommy help me add a few questions to the sheet and they can decorate some construction paper "book" covers to make the interviews into a book.

A Simple Parent-Child Activity: Asking Your Child Questions

Posted by drozzell on February 21, 2009

Do you ever   simply ask your kids questions, and then wait to see how they answer? I think this is a great thing to do with kids: engage them with questions. Just asking questions is one of the simplest, and probably most overlooked, ways to build a great relationship with your son or daughter. Here are some examples.

What is your favorite color? Why?

What is your favorite smell?

What was your favorite part of our last vacation?

What songs do you like? Are there any you do not like?

What is your favorite animal? Why?

If a genie gave you a wish, what would you wish for?

What is your favorite book or story?

You get the idea, and you will think of many questions of this type to ask. Let your child expound a bit, draw him or her out, and be ready to ask the key follow up question: Why? You will be amazed at what you learn.
