News about Umbilical Cords

TODAY IS MY DUE DATE!!!....No action yet =( I saw a statistic that sited only 10% of babies are born on their due date--none of my other four have, so I'm not holding out for today, but I know I'm in the last leg of the race.

I ran across some interesting information in American Baby Magazine about cutting the umbilical cord. The article was titled "Don't Cut the Cord Too Fast" It suggested a 2-3 minute delay in clamping the cord "improves a child's iron levels for his first six months of life" (according to a study by Camila Chaparro, Ph.D. in the journal of Maternal & Child Nutrition). Evidently, cutting the cord too quickly leaves the baby with an inadequate volume of the iron rich blood from the placenta----nutrients that help with motor and cognitive development. I'm going to check into how delaying the cord cut impacts cord blood collection. Anybody who has any info, please let me know.
