How busy should kids be over the summer?

As the school  year approaches its end, I find myself thinking that Summer break is going to be this magical time when the kids play together lovingly, we paint, swim, run through the sprinklers, read, etc. However, I get concerned about keeping the kids "busy enough". Several friends send their kids to camps. In past summers we've done this and I found that summer didn't feel like a break. Instead of rushing off to school, we were rushing off to camp. I also worry about not giving the kids the right opportunities if we stay at home for the most part during the summer. I am trying to keep in mind that I have 5 kids 8 and under. I definitely don't want to be driving around with a 2 year old and nursing baby all summer long. Hence my question...How busy should kids be over the summer?
