Breastfeeding 101...The First Few Weeks

Here are my top three tips for the first few weeks of breastfeeding:

We are what we eat. Your body is still working hard. Continue to eat healthy, drink lots of water & take your prenatal vitamins. Initially,  your baby is being introduced to the mechanics of breastfeeding & will be eating colostrum. The more often you nurse, the faster your breastmilk will come in. You will likely be nursing every 2-3 hours.

Keep count. You can’t measure how much milk your baby is getting through breastmilk, so keep count of your baby’s wet & dirty diapers to make sure baby is receiving adequate nutrition.

Give it time. Breastfeeding can take time to learn. Many new moms& babies find it takes some effort to perfect the skill. It can be difficult at first, but don’t give up. With help, the vast majority of women can successfully breastfeed: experiment with different positions & check your baby’s latch, meet with a lactation consultant, attend a local La Leche League meeting, and/or talk to other nursing mothers.

Most of all, pat yourself on the back for making the choice to give your baby the best start in life & health benefits that will last a whole life through.

You nurse to give your baby the best, let Modest Middles help you look great doing it!~Amy
