Post-partum Doula?.....The best gift I ever got!

My little Jason is 2 1/2 weeks old and I'm starting to get things together. We still take seemingly forever to get out the door =), but things are moving smoother and smoother by the day! With Jason being my 6th child, I often thought there are not many baby services that I haven't at least heard of before, but I was wrong. I received the gift of 4 hours of a post-partum doula. I had never heard of the profession and honestly wasn't sure what she would be able to do for me...I knew how to clean the baby's cord, swaddle him, no problems with diapering, feeding was going well, etc.

Well, the post-partum doula, Erin Buggy, of Yogi Doula Buggy, came to my house three days after Jason was born. It was my husband's first day back at work and the big kids had just left for school when Erin arrived at 8 am. I was still in my pjs, the two little girls were too and the baby was in my arms ready to eat again. Erin came in, got me a glass of water and sat down to find out what I needed help with. As a post-partum doula, she is trained to assist new moms in infant care and can help make things easier for moms as their attention and time is directed at caring for a new baby as well as recovering from the beautiful, but demanding process of labor and delivery.

For me, Erin made the girls and I a delicious breakfast, then got several loads of laundry washed folded and even got some put away! She made dinners for us from the things I had in the fridge and on the shelf. The spaghetti she made us smelled so good as it cooked. It's my family's favorite meal and was a huge hit! She had the sauce simmering on the stove, bread ready to pop in the oven and a salad in the fridge ready to be dressed and tossed. She did all of this as she helped my two girls (Jill 4, Maeve 1) make Ursula dolls out of craft materials from around the house. Where was I? What was I doing?....I got to nurse Jason uninterrupted! I put him in the bassinet, then got to take a leisurely shower. I got dressed and actually combed my hair instead of just clipping it up, then of course Jason wanted to eat again. Jason and I laid down. I nursed him and took the longest nap!!! When I woke up the house was clean, the girls were playing Barbies and Erin was finishing up dinner.

I felt awake, cognitively aware (these are two totally different states for me with a new baby), and RELAXED! Having a post-partum doula is nothing I would have gotten for myself...that is before I experienced how helpful and reinvigorating it was! Having Erin help me on my family's first day back in the grind of our busy schedule was an amazing gift. It set a positive tone for the day and really the rest of the week!

Anyone out there pregnant or looking for a great gift to get the pregnant lady in your life, I HIGHLY recommend a post-partum doula; Erin Buggy in particular if you are in the Phoenix area. www.yogidoulabuggy.com
