Here's a quick demo to show you how easy it is to promote independence following directions and language growth while helping your children to brush their teeth. It only takes minutes to share the magic of communication with kids and your daily activities are the best place to do it. In this short clip, Jillian (4y 4m) and Maeve (2y 0m) are learning the 3 steps to brushing their teeth: brush back teeth, brush front teeth, brush tongue. They love the movie The Little Mermaid and know all the characters, so I separate the steps to establish a routine using the characters from the movie along with the words, first, next/then, and last. I preview the routine for them, then use my words to support them completing the task.

Establishing Routines/Previewing
•Child search out patterns; they like predictability. Describe everyday activities. Talk about what you usually do first, next, and last.

For example, when you wake up in morning talk about what you do before lunch. "First, let's get dressed, then we'll eat breakfast. Next, we'll take your sister to school and then we'll come home for lunch."

Here's a quick demo to show you how easy it is to help grow your new talker's grammar during breakfast! Maeve (turned 2 years just 2 weeks ago) often leaves out important "helper" verbs in her speech. She says, "I eating." or "Baby crying"; she leaves out the helper verbs is, am, are, was, and were. This is very typical for a 2 year old, but it's also easy to help him/her grow grammatically. Amy Maschue, MS CCC-SLP (speech language pathologist who has worked with families who have children with Autism for over 14 years) and mom of 6 shows you how to model those helper verbs during breakfast. When modeling, you simply use your language to highlight the particular grammatical pattern (in this case helper verbs) you want your child to learn. No response from the child is required. Simply keep it short and enjoyable and your child will pick up your highlighted pattern before you know it!

Loved this story about three Phoenix sisters who found themselves pregnant at the same time and needed to make a change in their jobs.
